Kareena Kapoor's favourite dinner is not some gourmet dish
At a recent wellness event with nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, Kareena Kapoor shared her go-to dinner and no, it’s not some fancy gourmet dish. It’s the good old khichdi, topped with a spoon of ghee. She confessed that if her diet plan doesn’t include it, she actually gets restless and can’t even sleep properly. That’s how much she swears by it.
Turns out, this humble comfort food is also a nutrition powerhouse, especially for women in their 40s. In one of my earlier conversations with Rujuta, I remember telling her how my daughter insists on khichdi every night. Her response? “Brilliant! That’s the best dinner for anyone.” And now, after hearing Kareena rave about it, I couldn’t agree more.
So what makes khichdi such a hero meal?
To begin with, it’s easy to digest and naturally gluten-free. It helps people dealing with bloating or sensitive digestion. It’s packed with nutrients if you get the proportions right. But there are some tips and tricks that will make your khichdi meal even more nutritious and weight loss friendly.
The key is making sure your dal-to-rice ratio is higher so the dish is protein-rich and not too heavy on carbs. Adding vegetables like carrots, beans, peas, cauliflower, lauki, palak and even sweet potato can turn this into a well-balanced, fibre-rich dinner that supports metabolism, fertility and even helps manage menopausal symptoms.
A small but important tip: don’t cook your khichdi in ghee. Instead, add a spoon of ghee on top before eating. This helps digestion and boosts absorption of fat-soluble vitamins without making the dish oily.
If you are worried about getting bored, switch things up. Use different dals, or swap rice with millets or oats. This way, your body gets a variety of nutrients and the dish doesn’t feel repetitive.
And unlike most "healthy" meals, khichdi actually fills you up without leaving you sluggish. It is light, satisfying and helps with sleep too, something that Kareena swears by.
So next time you’re wondering what to eat for dinner, skip the takeout and go desi. Your 40s body (and mind) will thank you for it.
