A new study suggests that qigong, an ancient Chinese mind-body practice, could help people with chronic low back pain. Researchers found that practising qigong for eight weeks led to reduced pain and better sleep among a group of military veterans compared to those who did not practice it.
Qigong is similar to tai chi and involves slow-flowing movements, stretching, and meditation to improve flexibility, alignment, and relaxation. The study, published in Pain Management Nursing, shows qigong's potential benefits as a non-drug therapy for chronic pain sufferers.
Study Details and Findings
Researchers from Florida Atlantic University conducted a study on 22 veterans suffering from back pain. Ten veterans participated in an eight-week qigong program, while 12 were placed on a waitlist as a control group.
After eight weeks, those who practised qigong experienced:
- Reduced pain intensity
- Improved sleep quality
- Better flexibility and movement coordination
- Lower levels of inflammation-related chemicals in the body
“Stretching, loosening, strengthening, and balancing techniques of qigong may release back tension, ease pain, and improve flexibility,” said senior researcher Cheryl Krause-Parello, associate vice president for research at Florida Atlantic University.
Why Qigong is Important for VeteransBack pain is a common issue among military veterans, with 40 per cent to 70 per cent suffering from chronic pain. Many veterans are prescribed opioids, which can lead to addiction and overdose. Researchers believe qigong can be a safe, drug-free alternative to pain management.
“This holistic approach addresses the complex challenges faced by veterans with chronic low back pain without relying on medications,” Krause-Parello added.
More Benefits of QigongBeyond back pain relief, qigong offers several additional health benefits:
1. Strengthens Muscles and Joints – Gentle movements improve muscle strength and joint flexibility.
2. Enhances Posture and Balance – Helps in aligning the spine and reducing strain.
3. Boosts Mental Well-Being – Reduces stress, anxiety, and depression, which are common in chronic pain sufferers.
4. Improves Social Interaction – Encourages participation in group activities, reducing social isolation.
5. Supports Circulatory Health – Enhances blood flow and oxygen delivery, promoting healing.
Should You Try Qigong for Back Pain?
Experts believe healthcare providers should consider qigong as part of treatment plans for back pain sufferers. “Nurses and physical therapists should actively consider incorporating qigong into treatment plans to enhance overall well-being,” Krause-Parello suggested.
Since qigong is gentle and low-impact, it can be safely practised by people of all ages. Those experiencing chronic back pain, poor sleep, or stress may benefit from incorporating it into their daily routine.
