Pregnancy, a beautiful phase of life, can sometimes turn challenging for many women due to complications that make it high-risk. In India, the prevalence of high-risk pregnancies is increasing, posing concerns for both mothers and babies. But why is it on a constant rise? We got in touch with Dr Ila Gupta, Director and Senior Consultant of Reproductive Medicine at Ferticity IVF & Fertility Clinics, New Delhi, who explains the contributing factors of high-risk pregnancy and shares tips to manage these risks effectively.
Key Factors Behind High-Risk Pregnancies in India
1. Lack of Proper Nutrition
Nutrition plays a vital role in ensuring a healthy pregnancy. Dr Gupta explains, “A diet lacking in essential nutrients leads to complications like anaemia, low birth weight, and developmental problems in babies. In rural areas, where access to balanced diets is limited, the risks increase significantly, contributing to maternal mortality.”
2. Advanced Maternal Age And Teenage Childbirth
Urban career aspirations have led to delayed pregnancies, while teenage pregnancies remain common in rural regions. Dr Gupta shares, “Advanced maternal age increases the chances of gestational diabetes, hypertension, and cardiac issues. On the other hand, teenage mothers face premature births and complications as their bodies are not fully prepared for childbirth.”
3. Chronic Illnesses
Pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid disorders, and heart problems often go undiagnosed or poorly managed. “These can have severe implications on pregnancy outcomes, leading to preterm delivery or maternal and neonatal complications,” says Dr Gupta.
4. PCOS & Endometriosis
The rising incidence of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis complicates pregnancies. According to Dr Gupta, “Women with these conditions are more prone to gestational diabetes, miscarriage, or preterm birth, emphasizing the need for early diagnosis and intervention.”
5. Limited Access to Healthcare
Many women in rural areas lack adequate healthcare facilities and awareness about prenatal care. Dr Gupta explains, “Untreated infections, undiagnosed complications, and unsafe delivery practices often lead to higher maternal and neonatal mortality rates.”
6. Multiple Pregnancies
With advancements in fertility treatments, multiple pregnancies have become common. “Twins or triplets increase the risk of premature births and require close monitoring throughout the pregnancy,” says Dr Gupta.
7. Stress And Mental Health Issues
Mental health plays a significant role during pregnancy. Dr Gupta notes, “Stress, anxiety, and depression can impact both mother and baby, potentially causing hypertension, diabetes, or preterm delivery.”
8. Abortions and Unplanned Pregnancies
Unsafe abortions and unplanned pregnancies, often due to social pressures or inadequate medical care, pose significant risks. “Women experiencing multiple miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies should seek immediate medical attention to avoid complications,” advises Dr Gupta.
Preventing High-Risk PregnanciesDr Gupta stresses that timely interventions and awareness can significantly reduce risks. She suggests:
- Regular Check-ups: Prenatal and antenatal care is essential to monitor the mother and baby’s health.
- Balanced Nutrition: Include iron, folic acid, and essential nutrients in the diet.
- Manage Pre-existing Conditions: Properly treat chronic illnesses before conception.
- Mental Health Care: Stress management and emotional well-being are critical for a healthy pregnancy.
- Healthcare Access: Ensure women, especially in rural areas, have access to trained medical professionals and facilities.
High-risk pregnancies demand attention and proactive care. By adopting healthy lifestyle practices and seeking timely medical advice, women can navigate this journey safely, ensuring the well-being of both mother and child.
