A lot of men will tell you that embracing fatherhood changes a lot of things for them. Well, the same happened with Upstox Co-founder Shrini Viswanath. He became cognisant of how important it is for one to be in good shape and have good health. The birth of his child gave him a new perspective and he realised he had to take care of his well-being to be there for his family and child. He weighed 68 kgs before and in just a matter of 100 days, he shed over 13 kilos and brought it down to 55 kgs.
“When I decided to lose weight, I gave myself 100 days to make it happen. I set a goal, created a diet plan, and told myself there was no turning back. To hold myself accountable, I booked a photographer in advance for a shoot on the 100th day. That level of commitment helped me stay disciplined and focused throughout the journey,” shared Viswanath.
Even though Viswanath had been hitting the gym for over 10 years, he never focused on nutrition. “Now I ensure there are fiber-rich carbs, healthy fats and proteins in my everyday diet. I absolutely avoid processed foods, white sugar and fried food items. Also, a good marker was to eat foods that have a single ingredient,” he shared.
Talking about his workout schedule, Viswanath mentioned he would clock at least 8,000 steps everyday. “I also did weight training 3x a week. The idea was to get a full body workout that involved compound exercises like squats and deadlifts,” he shared.
Talking about the challenges he faced along the way, he said, “Balancing my professional and personal responsibilities was one of the biggest challenges. As a co-founder and a new parent, finding the time and energy to stay committed wasn’t easy. Another hurdle was making healthier food choices while resisting temptations like junk food. To overcome these, I replaced eating out with home-cooked meals, uninstalled food delivery apps, and focused on small, consistent steps like walking 8,000 steps daily, even if it was just within the house,” he said.
Interestingly, to keep himself motivated, he booked a photoshoot on the 100th day of his weight loss journey. "Getting a photoshoot done was a great idea. It gave me a financial and mental push to stay accountable. Support from my family also played a big role, as they encouraged me to stick to my plan even when temptations arose. Breaking the journey into smaller, achievable steps helped me stay focused and motivated," he reminisced.
Unlike many people who put a blanket ban on sweets and other things during weight loss journey, Viswanath decided to enjoy things he liked in moderation. "Mindful eating has been the key. I allowed myself small portions instead of overindulging," he shared.
Viswanath says he feels energetic after shedding many kilos. "My flat-foot-related pain has reduced significantly. Professionally, I feel more focused and productive, requiring less caffeine to stay alert. Most importantly, it’s given me confidence and a sense of accomplishment, proving that anyone can achieve their goals with the right mindset and consistency," he said.
His mantra throughout the journey has always been to take baby steps towards his goals and staying consistent. "Fitness isn’t about grand gestures; it’s about the little steps you take every day. Focus on nutrition—it matters more than what you do at the gym. Replace processed foods with whole foods, and find a routine that fits your lifestyle. Most importantly, remember that transformation is a mental game as much as a physical one. Set a goal, hold yourself accountable, and trust the process," he concludes.
