Actor-turned-politician Paresh Rawal claimed he once drank his urine to cure an injury he got while shooting, which not just worked for him but also stunned his doctor by the fast recovery. In a podcast interview, the 69-year-old said he was advised that the first pee of the day ensures speedy recovery.
However, the former parliamentarian also said he stayed away from alcohol, red meat, and smoking during this period. “Drink your first urine in the morning; all fighters do that. You’ll be cured of all issues, but you need to quit alcohol and meat as well,” Rawal recalled being advised in an interview with The Lallantop.
Rawal said since he had to recover quickly, he sipped his urine slowly and continued the practice for 15 days. He believes his injury showed significant improvement much faster than expected. “The doctors noticed a white lining over the injury, a sign of healing, and were astonished at how the cementing had naturally taken place,” Rawal said.

What are the claimed benefits of drinking urine?

Drinking urine has been an ancient practice in many parts of the world to treat health issues. Naturopaths claim that drinking urine may treat the following conditions:
  • Allergies
  • Acne
  • Cancer
  • Heart problems
  • Infections
  • Wounds
  • Stuffy nose
  • Rash and other skin ailments
  • Stings
However, there is no scientific evidence to support any of these claims.

Is drinking urine safe?

According to doctors, it is not safe to drink urine at all. “There is no scientific evidence to support the idea that drinking urine provides any health benefits. In fact, consuming urine can be harmful, potentially introducing bacteria, toxins, and other harmful substances into the bloodstream,” renowned hepatologist Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips wrote on the social media site X.
“Your kidneys work very hard to remove toxic stuff out of your body through urine. Don't insult it by putting it back in. Urine is not sterile,” he added.
Experts say there are many different colonies of healthy bacteria in your body—which include your urinary tract. While they are harmless, when urine passes through the urinary tract, they become contaminated. And so, drinking urine - whether your own or someone else’s—introduces bacteria into your system that can cause gastrointestinal problems or other infections.
Urine is also packed with waste products that have been filtered out of your bloodstream. Even though they are known as toxins, these waste products are highly concentrated. And your body is trying to get rid of these because if they stay in the body, they cause a lot of harm. Drinking urine reintroduces concentrated waste products into your system, which forces your kidneys to filter them out again, causing unnecessary strain.
