The White House has updated its official COVID-19 website, covid.gov, and it now promotes the idea that the coronavirus started from a lab leak in Wuhan, China. Earlier, the website shared helpful information about vaccines, free COVID tests, and how to stay safe. But now, it shows a picture of former President Donald Trump between the words “lab” and “leak.” The new version also claims that a lab in Wuhan had poor safety rules, which may have led to the virus escaping.
The website also blames US President Joe Biden and Dr Anthony Fauci, who led America’s health response during the pandemic. It says they pushed the idea that the virus came from animals in nature — something many scientists still believe.
In 2023, a US intelligence report said that there is not enough proof to say for sure whether the virus came from a lab or from nature. The exact origin of the virus remains unknown.
The new site also criticizes the health policies used during the pandemic — such as lockdowns, mask rules, and social distancing. It accuses the Biden administration and health officials of hiding alternative treatments and working with social media to block different opinions, especially from conservative voices.
There’s also a section on the website called “COVID-19 Misinformation.” It repeats claims that the Biden government didn’t tell the full truth during the pandemic.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is also mentioned. The site blames WHO for not supporting the lab leak idea. In 2020, when the virus was spreading fast, WHO told people not to call it the “China virus”. They said this kind of name could lead to racism and hate against Chinese and Asian communities. WHO believes that diseases should not be named after places or people.
Meanwhile, China strongly disagrees with the lab leak theory. When the CIA said earlier this year that the virus might have come from a Chinese lab, China replied that this was false and politically motivated. Chinese leaders say the U.S. is trying to blame them without proof.
This new website comes at a time when the US and China are facing tensions over trade and other global issues. It also comes after Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has often spoken against vaccines, was made Health Secretary. Reports suggest that about 10,000 public health jobs may be cut in the coming months.
Even today, COVID-19 continues to affect people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that about 325 people die from COVID each week in the US. Less than 25 per cent of adults have taken the most recent COVID-19 vaccine. Many people also suffer from long COVID, which causes tiredness, brain fog, and other health problems.
