Actress and stand-up comedian Amy Schumer has praised GLP-1 drug Mounjaro, saying it was instrumental in helping her fight perimenopause symptoms and get her to enjoy having sex. The 43-year-old compared Mounjaro with Wegovy, which she said she used for three years prior but had experienced intolerable side effects. “I was like puking; I couldn’t handle it,” she told her followers on Instagram.
Schumer also described her experiences with telehealth provider Midi Health to receive hormone treatment for perimenopause. According to Schumer, the combination is working extremely well for her. “My symptoms of being in perimenopause have disappeared. My hair is fuller, my skin is better, and I have more energy,” she said. “I want to get down more,” she added, referring to the positive effect on her libido. “So, yeah, that’s been great. Mounjaro’s been great,” Schumer added.

What is perimenopause?

Perimenopause happens when a woman’s body starts transitioning to menopause—during which your ovaries begin producing fewer hormones - causing your menstrual cycle to become erratic or irregular. In perimenopause, your body starts to move toward the end of your reproductive years. While it is a natural and normal progression, it comes with both physical and emotional symptoms—some of which can disrupt your life or make you uncomfortable.

How did Mounjaro work wonders for Amy?

According to Amy, Mounjaro did not cause her any side effects like Wegovy did. A few common ones that people who have used semaglutide include:
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain and upset stomach
  • Severe headache
  • Tiredness and dizziness
  • Bloating and belching
  • Low blood sugar levels
  • Stomach flu
  • Heartburn
  • Runny nose or sore throat
On the other hand, Eli Lilly, which manufactures Mounjaro, says negligible side effects include diarrhoea, decreased appetite, vomiting, and indigestion, all of which go away in some time.

How to cope with the side effects of GLIP-1 drugs?

Apart from gradually titrating up, clinicians have suggested a few other strategies to help patients stick with their medication until they adjust to the side effects. Studies suggest more frequent meals can help ease digestive woes while taking GLP-1 medications.
You must also avoid fatty or spicy foods to help combat nausea and add more fibre to your food intake to help mitigate constipation.

What does Schumer’s experience with weight loss drugs tell us?

Schumer had different experiences with both Wegovy and Mounjaro, which highlights the individualised nature of weight loss medications. According to experts, even though GLP-1 drugs are super effective, tolerance levels vary among individuals, and so, finding the right fit may require adjustments or alternative treatments.
Those who are struggling with side effects can gradually increase the doses, do dietary modifications, and speak with their doctor for clarity.
