Recently, actress Soha Ali Khan shared that her mother, the legendary Bollywood icon Sharmila Tagore, was diagnosed with lung cancer. Fortunately, the cancer was detected at an extremely early stage, allowing for successful treatment without the need for chemotherapy.
Soha spoke candidly about this difficult chapter in her family’s life during an interview with Nayandeep Rakshit on his YouTube channel. She reflected on the emotional toll the diagnosis had on their family, while also expressing relief and gratitude that her mother’s condition was caught before it progressed.
“I have had a loss in my family. We’ve been through stressful situations, as everybody does,” Soha said during the conversation. “With my mother, she was one of the very few people to be diagnosed with lung cancer at stage zero — and no chemotherapy, nothing. It was cut out of her and she is, touchwood, fine.”
The news about Sharmila Tagore’s diagnosis was first publicly disclosed during her appearance on the popular talk show Koffee with Karan in 2023. Appearing alongside her son, actor Saif Ali Khan, the veteran actress opened up for the first time about her health struggle and how the experience impacted her emotionally.
Sharmila’s case of lung cancer was detected at “stage zero,” an extremely early stage where the cancer has not yet spread. This early detection made it possible for doctors to surgically remove the cancer without additional treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation.
Early Signs of Lung Cancer to Watch Out For
Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths globally, and it is often detected at a later stage due to its subtle or misinterpreted early symptoms. However, being vigilant about the early warning signs can make a difference. Here are some early indicators to look out for:
A persistent cough that doesn’t go away or worsens over time.
Shortness of breath or wheezing during routine activities.
Chest pain may intensify with deep breathing or coughing.
Unexplained weight loss.
Fatigue or feeling unusually tired.
Coughing up blood or rust-coloured sputum.
Recurring respiratory infections, such as bronchitis or pneumonia.
While these symptoms can be associated with less serious conditions, it’s essential to consult an expert if they persist or cause concern. High-risk people, particularly those with a history of smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke, should undergo regular screenings.
Tips to Prevent Lung Cancer
While not all cases of lung cancer can be prevented, certain habits and lifestyle choices can reduce the risk:
Avoid smoking: This is the biggest risk factor. If you smoke, quitting now can significantly lower your risk.
Stay away from secondhand smoke: Breathing in smoke from others is also harmful.
Test your home for radon: Radon is a naturally occurring gas that can cause lung cancer. Home testing kits are available.
Limit exposure to harmful chemicals: Avoid long-term exposure to substances like asbestos and other industrial pollutants.
Eat a healthy diet: A diet rich in fruits and vegetables supports overall lung health.
Exercise regularly: Physical activity improves lung function and overall health.
Get regular health check-ups: Especially if you're at high risk, routine screenings can help detect problems early.
