I know it is tough to remain happy, but hear me out. Happiness is a bit like a badly behaved cat. It doesn’t come when you call it; it ignores your carefully laid plans, and sometimes it knocks over your favourite mug for no good reason. But if you’re patient, gentle, and maybe a little weird about it, happiness might curl up next to you when you least expect it.
We tend to think happiness is this grand event, like winning the lottery or discovering that your local café has started doing free cake Fridays. (Dream big.) But really, it’s more of a collage of tiny, ridiculous things. A good cup of tea. Laughing so hard you forget to feel awkward. Spotting a dog with its head out of a car window looking absolutely thrilled by life.
Of course, being happy doesn't mean feeling fantastic all the time. Nobody is that suspiciously cheerful. Life can be chaotic. People are unpredictable. Wi-Fi goes down. The real trick is noticing small joy even when things are a bit rubbish.
Start silly. Wear socks that make you grin. Dance terribly in the kitchen while you wait for the kettle to boil. Name your houseplants. Give them personalities. (Brian the fern is very judgemental.)
Happiness also loves company, but the right kind. Find your people. The ones who let you rant about your bizarre dream from last night or send you memes at 2am. Humans are wired for connection, not perfection.
And sometimes happiness is quiet. It’s setting boundaries, saying no without guilt, turning your phone off, and getting eight hours of sleep like an absolute champion. It’s about giving yourself permission to be boring if that’s what recharges you.
Lastly, and this is important, lower the bar. Some days, happiness is not crying over spilt milk (or at least laughing while you mop it up). It’s surviving the day. Brushing your teeth. Taking a deep breath and saying, “Well, that was a lot.”
Happiness isn’t a permanent state. It’s a visitor. And like that badly behaved cat, you don’t need to chase it. Create a life it wants to visit, quirky, messy, human. And when it shows up? Let it sit on your lap for as long as it likes.
