A woman from the US recently went viral on TikTok after sharing her experience of living with non-stop menstrual bleeding for more than 1,000 days. In her video, the woman named Poppy revealed how doctors failed to catch a rare condition that was actually spotted in her very first ultrasound.
Poppy’s story began three years ago when she experienced two straight weeks of bleeding. Concerned, she sought medical help. But instead of answers, she was left with more confusion. Despite consulting multiple doctors, undergoing several tests, and trying different medications, her bleeding continued—for months and eventually years.
“I was exhausted. My iron levels were at rock bottom. I had constant cramps, body aches, headaches, and nausea,” Poppy said in her emotional video.
At first, doctors diagnosed her with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a common hormonal disorder. They found cysts on her ovaries and suspected they might be the cause. She was given medication and even had an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted in hopes of controlling her periods. But nothing worked.
Even after undergoing a hysteroscopy (a procedure to examine the inside of the uterus), MRIs, and multiple ultrasounds, the source of the problem remained a mystery. Poppy said the constant bleeding and lack of answers deeply affected her mental health and pushed her into depression.
“Imagine bleeding every day for three years. I spent all my savings on pads, new clothes, bedsheets… I cried every day,” she said.
Then, on day 950 of her ordeal, a surprising twist happened—thanks to a suggestion from one of her TikTok followers. While revisiting old medical reports and scans, Poppy discovered that her condition had actually been spotted in the very first ultrasound she had received. But no one had mentioned it to her.
She was diagnosed with bicornuate uterus, a rare congenital condition where the uterus is shaped like a heart and divided into two chambers instead of one. This condition affects less than 5 per cent of women and is often missed during routine checkups. For some, it causes no issues, but for others like Poppy, it can result in prolonged bleeding, painful periods, and fertility complications.
According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, irregular periods are not uncommon—affecting 14 per cent to 25 per cent of women of childbearing age. But when symptoms like persistent bleeding or pain show up, it’s essential to get a thorough diagnosis.
Now, Poppy is finally hopeful for a solution. She is preparing for a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure, in which doctors will scrape away abnormal tissue from her uterus. She also plans to remove her IUD and undergo a full hormone test. Further, she is exploring surgical options to correct her heart-shaped uterus, which may finally end her years-long struggle. “Thinking about a life where I’m not bleeding every single day… it’s like heaven,” she shared.
