For a generation raised on instant messaging, emails, and voice notes, the sound of a ringing phone can trigger anything but excitement. In fact, many Gen Z are now admitting they experience telephobia—a fear or anxiety associated with making or receiving phone calls.
Recently, content creator Uptin shared a reel on Instagram where he explains how phone call anxiety, or 'telephobia,' has become a common issue for Gen Z. In his reel, he revealed that nearly 75 per cent of Gen Z admit to never answering phone calls and many experience real difficulty when they have to make one.
This phobia is beginning to cause real-life challenges. From scheduling dentist appointments to handling job interview calls, avoiding phone conversations has become a barrier.
“Phone interviews, in particular, are intimidating for students,” he said. “They’ve never really had a chance to practice how to speak on the phone, especially in professional scenarios.” As a result, career counsellors and educators are stepping in to help.
In his reel, he explains that to overcome this fear, workshops and training sessions are being held on campuses and virtually. These sessions are aimed at giving Gen Z the tools and practice they need to confidently make phone calls. Students rehearse everyday tasks such as booking appointments or responding to interview queries, often using scripts and note cards.
One career advisor shares the importance of preparation, he shares. “Pick a quiet space, have a note card with key talking points and use deep breathing techniques to settle your nerves before dialling.” He also encourages students to reframe their mindset: “You are in charge of the phone call. If it's something you don’t want, you have every right to end it. That gives you power.”
Experts say phone anxiety often starts from a fear of the unknown—who's on the other end, what they'll say, and the pressure of responding instantly.
