ICMR Says Those Living Near Drains Are At High Risk of Developing Cancer; Here's Why

Super high levels of lead, iron, and aluminum were detected in the water

The Indian Council of Medical Research, the country’s top medical panel, has said those who live near drains face a high risk of developing cancer, according to a new study. The research, published in the Indian Academy of Sciences, has found that the danger levels in these areas shot up many times more than the safe limits, causing hazardous health concerns.
Super high levels of lead, iron, and aluminium were detected in the water, which surpassed the permissible limits that have been set by the Central Pollution Control BoUnion Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav stated this in the Rajya Sabha.

How do chemicals lead to cancer?

According to experts, heavy metals like lead, iron, and aluminium can contribute to cancer risk through mechanisms like inducing oxidative stress, damaging DNA, and disrupting cell processes, ultimately leading to increased cancer risk.

How does lead affect the human body?

The Environment Protection Agency, or EPA, considers lead a probable human carcinogen, and inorganic lead compounds are classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Classified as a probable human carcinogen, inorganic lead compounds can lead to cancers of the stomach, lungs, kidney, brain, and meninges.
Lead is a toxic metal that was once regularly used in the manufacturing of common household products and gasoline. There is no safe level of exposure to lead. Lead is a naturally occurring element, and, unlike many pollutants, it does not go away over time.
In the past, lead was added to gasoline, paints, water pipes, ceramic glazes, and fertilisers and used in many industrial processes. Since the late 1970s, the elimination of lead in gasoline and paints has dramatically reduced lead pollution in the United States. However, lead remains in our environments, especially near major roadways and in older homes.
Doctors say lead accumulates in the bones, liver, and kidneys and can get into the blood as well. The effects of lead poisoning may continue after the source of exposure has been eliminated.

Aluminium exposure is dangerous for humans

Many studies in the past have found aluminium in breast tumours, but these studies have small sample sizes and do not compare aluminium levels in tumours to other parts of the body.
Other ways you may be exposed to aluminium are through food, water, and vaccines. Doctors say if you are generally healthy, your body does a good job of eliminating excess aluminium.
