Holi is a festival of joy, togetherness, and vibrant colours. However, the synthetic colours commonly used during celebrations can pose serious health risks. Many Holi colours contain toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and industrial dyes that can interfere with the body's endocrine system, leading to hormonal imbalances. So how can you keep yourself safe? We got in touch with Dr Rashi Agrawal, Consultant, Endocrinology, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Navi Mumbai and Dr Mannan Gupta, Chairman and HOD, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Elantis Healthcare, New Delhi, who shares chemical colours can impact hormones along with safer alternatives.

The Impact of Chemical Colours on Hormones

The endocrine system regulates essential bodily functions, including metabolism, reproduction, and growth. Exposure to synthetic chemicals can disrupt hormone production and lead to several health complications.

1. Disruption of Thyroid Hormones

Heavy metals such as lead and mercury, commonly found in artificial colours, interfere with the production of thyroid hormones. This can result in:
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Sluggish metabolism
  • Memory and concentration problems
According to Dr Rashi Agrawal, "The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism. Exposure to lead and mercury from Holi colours can significantly alter thyroid hormone levels, leading to long-term health issues."

2. Harmful Effects on Reproductive Health

Toxins such as phthalates and arsenic, present in artificial colours, can mimic or block natural hormones, leading to reproductive issues in both men and women. These effects include:
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Infertility
  • Low sperm count
  • Premature puberty in children
Dr Mannan Gupta states, "Xenoestrogens in chemical-based Holi colours can severely impact estrogen levels in women, leading to menstrual irregularities and even fertility challenges. In men, these toxins may disrupt testosterone levels, affecting sperm production."

3. Increased Risk of PCOS and Acne

Women exposed to endocrine-disrupting chemicals in Holi colours may experience aggravated symptoms of PCOS, including:
  • Acne outbreaks
  • Unwanted facial hair growth
  • Irregular ovulation
  • Increased insulin resistance
"Many of these synthetic chemicals act as endocrine disruptors, worsening PCOS symptoms and triggering insulin-related issues," warns Dr Agrawal.

4. Adrenal Exhaustion and Stress Hormones

Toxic substances such as cadmium and lead overstimulate the adrenal glands, which are responsible for producing cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. This can result in:
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Mood swings, anxiety, and depression
  • Difficulty coping with stress
  • Increased risk of insulin resistance
Dr Gupta adds, "Continuous exposure to harmful Holi colours can lead to adrenal exhaustion, making it harder for the body to manage stress and regulate energy levels."

5. Higher Chances of Diabetes and Obesity

Diabetes and obesity are among the most widespread health concerns today. Some chemicals in Holi colours interfere with insulin function, making it difficult for the body to regulate blood sugar levels. This disruption can cause:
  • Increased sugar cravings
  • Sudden energy crashes
  • Higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes
"Endocrine-disrupting chemicals in artificial colours have been linked to metabolic disorders, including obesity and insulin resistance, which can eventually lead to diabetes," explains Dr Agrawal.

Harmful Chemicals in Synthetic Holi Colours

Many synthetic Holi colours contain hazardous chemicals that are harmful to the body. Some of the most dangerous substances include:
  • Lead oxide (black colour): Linked to neurological and developmental issues, especially in children.
  • Mercury sulfide (red colour): Can cause skin allergies, kidney damage, and nervous system disorders.
  • Copper sulfate (green colour): Associated with eye infections and allergic reactions.
  • Aluminum bromide (silver colour): Can cause respiratory problems and skin irritation.
  • Malachite green (green colour): A synthetic dye that is toxic and can damage internal organs with prolonged exposure.
These chemicals are not meant for skin application and can enter the body through absorption or inhalation, leading to both immediate allergic reactions and long-term health consequences.

Safer Alternatives for Holi

Dr Gupta shares that to reduce the health risks associated with chemical Holi colour, consider these safer alternatives:
  • Use natural colours: Opt for colours made from turmeric, beetroot, henna, marigold flowers, or sandalwood.
  • Buy organic and herbal colours: Purchase from trusted sources to ensure purity and safety.
  • Protect your skin and hair: Apply coconut or almond oil before playing Holi to create a protective barrier.
  • Wear protective clothing: Full-sleeved clothes reduce direct contact with synthetic colours.
  • Wash off colours immediately: Use mild soap and lukewarm water to remove colours as soon as possible.
Dr Gupta explains, "Using natural, plant-based colours is the best way to enjoy Holi without exposing yourself to harmful chemicals. Additionally, applying oil to the skin before playing can minimize absorption of toxic substances."
Chemical-laden Holi colours may enhance the fun momentarily but can have lasting negative effects on hormonal health. Opting for natural alternatives ensures a safer, healthier celebration for you and your loved ones.
