Holi is just around the corner, and the festival of colours is incomplete without the most loved beverage—Thandai. This refreshing drink is a must during celebrations, but is it actually good for health? Thandai, from the name itself, signifies a cool and refreshing drink that helps lower body temperature and provide relief from the scorching heat.
This traditional Indian beverage is prepared using rich flavours and nutrient-dense ingredients, including almonds, poppy seeds (khus khus), fennel (saunf), melon seeds, peppercorns, cardamom, saffron, rose petals, and sometimes cashews, cinnamon, nutmeg, and rose water. These ingredients are soaked, blended into a concentrate, and mixed with milk. Plant-based milks like almond or oat milk can also be used for those looking for healthier alternatives.
According to Safia Livingston, Dietician (MS RD) at MASSH, Thandai is a powerhouse of nutrition when prepared mindfully. "This super drink not only hydrates but also replenishes lost electrolytes due to excessive sweating in the summer heat. The nuts and seeds provide a vitamin E boost, which is great for skin health, while fennel and poppy seeds aid digestion by reducing bloating and indigestion."
However, she advises caution regarding sugar content. "Often, commercially available Thandai mixes are loaded with added sugars, which can overshadow its health benefits. Making it at home allows you to control sugar intake and maintain a healthy balance of nuts, seeds, and spices," she suggests.

Potential Health Risks of Bhang-Infused Thandai

During festivals like Holi, Thandai is sometimes infused with bhang, a preparation made from the Cannabis sativa plant. Bhang contains two primary cannabinoids: THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). While CBD is known for its calming effects, THC has psychoactive properties that can impact people differently.
Safia Livingston explains, "The effects of bhang can last anywhere from 4 to 12 hours, peaking between 2 and 3 hours post-consumption. While some people may feel euphoric, others may experience adverse effects. Understanding these risks is crucial before indulging."

Possible Side Effects of Bhang Consumption

  1. Increased Heart Rate: Bhang can cause a spike in heart rate, leading to discomfort in the chest. People with pre-existing heart conditions should be cautious.
  2. Drop in Blood Pressure: THC dilates blood vessels, increasing blood flow to the eyes, making them red, and potentially causing dizziness.
  3. Dry Mouth: Excessive consumption can reduce salivation, contributing to bad breath and discomfort.
  4. Memory and Concentration Issues: Short-term memory and learning ability can be impaired, sometimes lasting up to a few weeks.
  5. Mood Swings: Since THC impacts the nervous system, some may experience rapid shifts in emotions, including excessive laughter, crying, talkativeness, or sudden feelings of depression.

How To Make Thandai Healthy?

Opting for homemade Thandai gives better control over the ingredients, ensuring a wholesome and refreshing summer drink without unnecessary additives. Safia Livingston explains substituting refined sugar with natural sweeteners like honey or dates and adding spices like turmeric and cinnamon to enhance both the taste and health benefits.
