A beloved social media influencer died of a massive cardiac arrest at the age of 45 while getting a tattoo done. Ricardo Godoi, a Brazilian auto influencer, began having symptoms of the heart condition right at the start of the procedure to ink his entire back, according to news reports.
Godoi was under anesthesia for the tattoo procedure.
Godoi, who has over 226,000 Instagram followers, rose to fame by building an online business selling Lamborghinis and Ferraris. In his last post, the influencer said, “I’m about to undergo a surgical procedure and will only be back here after 4 pm.”
The New York Post reported that the moment Godoi was administered general anesthesia for the procedure, he suffered a heart attack. A police investigation into the event is reportedly in progress. “He was quickly checked, and a cardiologist was called in to try to revive him, unfortunately without success,” the owner of the studio said in a statement published by the Daily Mail.
Health risks to consider while getting a tattoo
According to experts, the popularity of tattoos has been increasing over the years, mostly among youngsters, with 40 per cent having at least one. They appeal for their customised art, which can reflect your personality or even honour people important in your life. However, getting a quality tattoo is not always easy, though they are much safer than decades ago.
The actual process itself consists of a tattoo needle injuring your skin to design the art. The needle also inserts small amounts of colour pigments. If your skin heals correctly, you can see beautiful, permanent skin art. Doctors say the key to tattoo safety is making sure these micro-injuries to the skin heal properly and that you work with a safe and reputable artist.
A few risks and side effects that you may consider include:
Skin infection
Tattoo needles pierce through both the upper and middle layers of skin, which need to recover properly after you get new ink. An infection can also occur if nonsterile water is mixed with the ink before injection. According to doctors, if the infection spreads, you can have other symptoms like fever.
Allergy
Many people also develop an allergic reaction after getting a tattoo. It is usually because of the ink—especially if it has plastic—and not the needling process itself. Studies say red, yellow, blue, and green pigments are the most allergenic.
Symptoms of an allergic reaction from tattoos can include a red rash, hives, and severe itchiness along with swelling.
Hide the signs of skin cancer
A major risk of getting a tattoo is that it can hide possible signs of skin cancer or another skin condition, which include the telling moles and red patches.
Keloid scarring
Experts say all tattoos have the potential to cause scars, especially if they do not heal properly or if you have an infection or allergic reaction. Eventually, you can also develop keloid scars, which consist of raised bumps that contain old scar tissue.
Complications related to MRIs
Doctors say if you have been asked to get an MRI scan, there is a chance that it can interact with your existing tattoo and lead to side effects like swelling and itchiness. Your risk of such reactions could be higher if your tattoo was inked with low-quality pigments or if the tattoo is old.
Issues with tattoo ink
You can be sensitive to certain colours, especially brighter pigments. According to the Food and Drug Administration, the ink can have traces of chemicals like nickel, lead, and other cancer-causing agents.
