A simple act of passing urine can turn into a nightmare at times. Sometimes, urination can be painful at the end (dysuria) due to various reasons. We spoke to Dr. Amit Saple, Consultant Urologist, Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology Vizag about what could cause such a situation?
He listed a few causes below.
- Urinary Infection: Urinary infection (UTI) happens when bacteria invade the urinary tract. Person additionally may also report frequency of urination, foul smelling urine, cloudy urine and at times, fever.
- Stones: Stones, especially if they are lodged in the ‘lower’ urinary tract (lower ureter, bladder or urethra) can cause such pain. Patient may also report pain in the sides (flank) and vomiting
- Sexually Transmitted diseases (STDs): Organisms such as gonococci and chlamydia can be transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse and can cause infection of the urethra. A person could have a boils or ulcers on their genitals.
- Bladder Infections (Cystitis): Bladder inflammation caused by bacteria or chemical irritation from soaps, douches can lead to discomfort.
- Interstitial cystitis: causes discomfort in the bladder and urethra, especially during urination. It is also known as painful bladder syndrome
- Prostatitis: Inflammation of the prostate gland either due to bacteria or sometimes without, can cause pain during urination. Additionally, patient could have difficulty urinating, painful ejaculation and needing to urinate frequently, especially at night
- Urethritis: Inflammation of the urethra, often due to infection or irritation, can cause a burning sensation, particularly at the end of urination
- Vaginal Irritation or Infection: In women, vaginal infections like fungal infections can cause discomfort during urination. Patient may also report foul-smelling or unusual vaginal discharge, pain during intercourse or mild vaginal bleeding.
- Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: Tight pelvic muscles can disturb urination, causing pain during urination
- Dehydration: Highly concentrated urine from inadequate intake of fluids can irritate the bladder lining, causing discomfort.
- Recent Sexual Activity: Friction during intercourse may cause temporary discomfort while urinating
- Bladder Cancer: Can cause pain during urination, along with blood in the urine.
When Should You See A Doctor?
A person should see a doctor if the pain is persistent, or in presence of following symptoms:
- blood in the urine
- pain in the side or back
- unusual discharge from the penis or vagina
- fever
A person should not ignore pain when urinating. A urologist can often help identify treatments that will reduce pain.
