5 Unmissable Signs of Fatty Liver You Can Check Easily At Home, According to Top Liver Specialist

there are various early signs and symptoms of fatty liver disease that you must check early on

Many people are oblivious to the fact that they have fatty liver disease—or that the condition can have a significant health impact or be life-threatening. At least 32–40 per cent of people across the world have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and millions have it in the advanced stage. While it is on course to become the leading reason for liver transplants in the coming years, this only cure means long waits on liver registries.
And so, according to experts, there are various early signs and symptoms of the condition that you must check early on to avoid complications later. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a Stanford and Harvard-trained liver specialist, lists out five early signs that are unmissable.

Weight gain around your waist

According to Dr. Sethi, weight gain around your midsection is a sign of fatty liver disease, also known as hepatic steatosis which occurs when fat builds up in your liver.
And so, you need to be careful not to put on weight, as those who have a body mass index or BMI over 27 are at higher risk. Those who gain weight around their tummies are at greater risk than those who gain weight around their hips or shoulders.

Constant tiredness

“Constant tiredness or fatigue could indicate your liver is struggling,” Dr. Sethi said on his Instagram.
While there can be many reasons for feeling tired and fatigued, it is mostly prevalent, persistent, and complex in those with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Doctors say fatigue is analysed in terms of peripheral and central fatigue, which increases the precision of evaluation while elucidating causes and improving treatment.

Pain and discomfort below the right rib section

“This might signal liver inflammation,” said Dr. Sethi. Your liver is located in the upper right abdomen, and discomfort in that area indicates a liver issue like fatty liver. However, it is also important to consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis, as other conditions can also cause pain in that region.

Acne, darkened skin fold, or hair loss

“Insulin resistance can cause this issue,” Dr. Sethi added. Also known as acanthosis nigricans – the condition refers to a darkening of the skin folds, like skin creases on your neck. Many times, you may also have rosacea, a common skin condition that leads to the cheeks and nose flushing. Light skin with rosacea appears red, whereas dark skin with rosacea can show a dusky brown discolouration.
According to Dr. Sethi, hair loss happens due to disrupting hormone levels, which makes it difficult for your body to process nutrients for hair health.

Nausea and loss of appetite

Dr. Sethi says nausea and loss of appetite can be signs of fatty liver disease, particularly when the condition progresses to a more severe stage, as these symptoms often indicate liver dysfunction and can be accompanied by other signs like abdominal discomfort, fatigue, and unexplained weight loss.
