As you age, your risk of heart disease increases and so, as a senior, it is important to take care of your health

Tiku Talsania Heart Attack: Veteran Bollywood Actor Tiku Talsania – known for his comic roles in movies and television, has suffered a massive heart attack, according to news reports. The 70-year-old actor is said to be in a critical condition and is undergoing treatment in a Mumbai hospital.
Studies say one person dies every 36 seconds from heart diseases, including heart attacks and strokes. According to doctors, this data equates to roughly one in every four deaths.

Four ways the elderly can take care of heart health

As you age, your risk of heart disease increases, and so, as a senior, it is important to take care of your health. Doctors say while exercise remains one of the best ways to maintain a healthy heart and improve your overall health, those over 60 must have a daily routine, which helps keep their body fit.
A few ways to take care of your heart health include:

Make an exercise regime

Before you begin a routine, you should first check with your doctor to ensure it is appropriate and safe for you to start. At the age of 60 years and above, exercise would not necessarily mean running a marathon or even running around your neighbourhood. However, the most effective routines involve both activity and stretching.
A few of these exercises include:
  • Brisk walking
  • Cycling
  • Dancing
  • Zumba
  • Water aerobics
Resistance training exercises help increase your core muscle strength to improve your balance, making you less likely to fall. A few of these exercises include push-ups, squats, and arm reaches.
Many people like doing yoga, which is also an effective and beneficial exercise if you are careful to adjust it to what you feel comfortable with.

Do not smoke

Quit immediately if you have been smoking. If you used to smoke and have quit, then it is good for you. However, if you are struggling to quit, do not worry. There are lots of resources available including useful apps and support groups.

Maintain a healthy weight

While it becomes difficult to lose weight as you age, it is important to know that most diets do not work in your 70s. The reason? Often, they concentrate on the latest “fad” or whatever is popular at the time. The best way to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight is to have a solid nutritional plan in place. Eat fresh, seasonal, and nutritious food like fresh fruits and vegetables – whole grains, dairy nuts, and seeds.
Avoid eating processed foods, which at this age neither will you be able to digest, nor is good for your heart health as they increase cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

Eat foods that are rich in omega-3

Omega-3s are packed with good fatty acids that help the functioning of your heart. While many people can get enough in two servings of fatty fish a week, for those who don’t, Omega-3 tablets can help.
A few types of fatty fish include:
  • Atlantic mackerel
  • Sardines
  • Salmon
  • Herring
  • Trout
  • Cod
  • Canned light tuna
However, doctors say it is important to avoid fish that have high levels of mercury, such as swordfish.
